Racha Movie Review

The Film
Racha is an audio-visual feast for Ram Charan’s fans. It is a regular mainstream mass masala entertainer with 7 comedy scenes, 6 romantic interludes, 5 song-and-dance bits, 4 fights, 3 dramatic acts, 2 twists and 1 flashback.
The dialogues, dances and body language of Ram Charan will flood the audience with a distinct sense of deja vu as they remind them of selected scenes from Chiranjeevi’s yesteryear hit films.

The Synopsis
The film opens with a bomb blast where two village elders are killed. After a lapse of time, we see Raju (Ram Charan Tej) known as Betting Raj as he is in the habit of taking undue risks like car racing to win money. He accepts a bet of Rs 20 lakhs offered by James (Ajmal Ameer) as he needs the money to take care of the medical expenses of his father (MS Narayana). The bet is that Raj has to make Chaitra (Tamannah), a rich girl studying medicine, fall in love with him within thirty days. She happens to be the daughter of mining magnate Bellari (Mukhesh Rishi).

As the romance between Raju and Chaitra progresses, we find that each of them has a past and it has its origins in the initial bomb blast incident. The past makes Chaitra to be in danger for the present while Raju’s past has an unfinished business to be completed at present.

The Performances
Ram Charan is energetic and dons the role of a pucca commercial hero with remarkable dances and striking action episodes. His dialogue delivery is very much reminiscent of his father. Tamannah is truly glamorous and her role has nothing much to show any thespian talents. Mukesh Rishi is his normal vicious villain.
The comedy troupe of Brahmanandam, Ali, Raghu Babu, Dharmavarapu, Thagumothu Ramesh, Jayaprakash Reddy and etc do their bits of rib-tickling. All others including Nassar, Parthiban, Kota, Dev Gill and others have insignificant cameos.

The Techniques
The story has nothing new to offer, but director Sampath Nandi relied on neatly choreographed songs and well orchestrated action sequences with dialogues having the distinct style of Paruchuri Bros to pack a punch in the narration. However, the story-telling flow in the second half takes a beating with inappropriate placement of songs plus the predictability factor.
The screenplay has total focus on the hero and his characterisation could not be elevated with the absence of a well-etched supporting character.Music is good. Cinematography and editing somehow do not add to the narration value. Sound design is poor. Production values are high.

The Verdict
The title Racha, according to the director Sampath Nandi, is created by taking ‘Ra’ from Ram and ‘cha’ from Charan. This makes it clear that the film is conceived, created and constructed to eulogise the hero and specially focused on the target audience: the hero’s fans and the masses. To that extent the director succeeds.

This is the director’s second film and he will one day know that mere songs, dances, fights and punch dialogues do not make a blockbuster. It is not sufficient if the narration has twists. The plot has to be intricate with sufficient dramatic ingredients. And why double entendre at all?

The typical presentation of Racha is exclusively for Ram Charan’s fans.
