Avunu Movie Review

The Film

Avunu is a paranormal activity horror-thriller with the theme of monophobic hallucinations and spiritual haunts.

The Synopsis

There is a gated community called Classic Homes situated about 30 kms from Hyderabad. Harsha has bought house no 72 there and occupies it with his newlywed wife Mohini (Poorna). Soon strange things start happening in the house. The lonely wife is terrified by the paranormal activity. Then she accosts the ghost. A police officer (Ravi Babu) enters to investigate. There is also a psychiatrist. The thriller then gets the most unpredictable twist before the climax.

The Performances
Poorna has given an outstanding performance as the haunted woman. She is truly brilliant. Harsha Vardhan Rane is confident and convincing. Ravi Babu is immaculate as the police officer. Chalapathi Rao is good, as usual. The others are ok in their roles.

The Techniques
Ravi Babu has written a thrilling story and his taut screenplay keeps the suspense until the superb twist and climax. The dialogues are to the point. The background score is very apt and enhances the narration values and the fear factor. Sound design is good. Cinematography is vivid and vital. The computer-generated imagery ( CGI) effects are excellent. Editing is sharp and crisp. Production values are in accordance with the theme of the film and budget.

The Verdict
Ravi Babu has stated that he wrote the story based on a true life experience narrated to him by actress Yami Gautam. But, he made the film in such a gripping fashion that Avunu will be a treat to all those who are addicted to the horror-thriller genre. Even for the regular commercial cinema goer, this film would appeal because this is not exactly a horror film. It is a very intelligently made film that is worth a watch.

    Anil says:

Do you guys really watch these movies before writing these reviews…? It’s a well made film but viewers come out of theater with dissatisfaction as nothing is clear towards the end…Nothing is resolved..Rapist spirit got scot free..i think Ravi has a sequel in his mind…

    Dear Anil,

Dissatisfaction and disappointment depends on the expectations we have about a film. More the expectations, more the disappointment. Liking a film, or disliking it, is an individual preference; more of a subjective opinion.

Critics cannot afford to be fans of either the stars or directors. The critic has to give an objective assessment. For a critical analysis, the C5 of Cinema is the benchmark : Conceptualisation, Characterisation, Cinematography, Communication and Clarity.

As you said, there is no clarity at the end. The director, cinema being his medium, gives his take of the story which he is telling and many of us may not agree with it. The critic will only state the positives of the structure of a film and not give a judgement on the film except a rating based on the benchmarks. Moreover, this genre of horror-thriller is for a niche audience. As I said in The Verdict, “Avunu will be a treat to all those who are addicted to the horror-thriller genre.”
